I've been reading and watching a lot on this, especially how one silly conservative from England has been projected across all your screens. Whilst the NHS fails on a few levels, overall I strongly believe it is a huge success because of one reason. The simple fact that anyone regardless of financial restrictions is able to get health care, many time I've been ill or broken something and the NHS has been there, no questions asked.

I'm not sure how you guys view it but we are able to get private health care if you want or you can just have the public option. From my families point of view we have private health care for only severe cases or very big emergencies, otherwise we use the NHS which was there for me when I broke my ankle, had menigitis and a penis reduction (it was far too big).

Its hard to understand why its viewed as 'Evil', that stupid whore from Alaska has no idea because the amount of people it helps every year is amazing. I don't know the facts on this but wouldn't the US health service still be available on a private level?

In my opinion it would help some of the less well off familes to get care without paying loads.

Debate away :D

I agree with ur point.  but you must remember we're talking about corporate america.  if people are up in arms about it, more than likely it has something to do with someone not making enough money on something.  money comes first, people come second.

unless of course they have money.

Its such a shame though, from my experience in America I worked in CT and Detroit... Two different worlds. I don't like the idea of abandoning people in need just because of a few dollars or pounds.

Hopefully Obama is strong enough to see this through and make it work, by no means flawless but something to work on and something to make the rest of the world jealous.

Why should I foot the healthcare bill for people that are too lazy to go out and work. We need less welfare in this country, not more!!!!!!!

Fair point I guess Bain. However its a flawed idea, what about those people who arent lazy but don't have jobs? What about the people who weren't privileged enough to get an education and work in jobs that don't pay well enough?

Plus its not just you, its the whole country. I big singular effort to make the country a better, healthier place for everyone.

You already pay for insurance, knock that off and pay taxes! I'm sure if Obama can implement a proper tax plan it can benefit everyone to a certain extent.

I think the idea of universal coverage is very noble.
I dont think anyone with any sense of humanity would like to see another human being suffer or not have access to the care one needs.

The Issue is HOW we go about it.

Socialized medicine or the administartion of health care by the government has many many pitfals:

1. Us Drug Industry has been the sourc of most pharmaceutical innovation globally. If their profits
come under the regulation of the gov't they will not have the funds nor the incentive for R&D
for new, potentially life saving drugs and care.
2. Same issue as above has lead to a shortage of Doctors and health care providers in Canada
which means long wait times to receive care and rationing of care,
3. American culture just doesnt lend itself to good govt (except for defense). Government
Monoploies rarely give good service or deliver a good product. Think about it ... do you want yourhealthcare to be created and administered by an entity thats like the Division of Motor Vehicles.

I think we need to exapnd to coverage AND DO EVERYTHING WE CAN TO TAKE CARE OF THOSE LESS FORTUNATE.

THE QUESTION IS HOW!

SOCIALIZED MEDICINE IS NOT THE ANSWER.

Another good point(s) Fluffmeister. Again I hear what your saying and your on the right track but what if this situation could be used to further stimulate the pharmaceutical companies into spending more on R&D?

Would it not be possible for companies to bid on certain contracts (relative to the injury/disease) thus making each company compete at a higher level because without contracts in the homeland they have to find out sources of income. I guess you could argue that losing a contract could put a company out of business, but with so many areas to bid and compete in I find this hard to believe the business brains would let this happen.

Again this would help to restrict monopolies providing the US Govt put in reasonable trading conditions/ restrictions.

I understand fully about the waiting times, but surely its better to wait (when required) rather than to struggle to have any health care at all.

The whole situation intrigues me, it also pisses me off that I had some fat d***head on my tv screen this morning shouting 'Your health system sucks!' Looks like his diet sucks.

Thank you Danjel for your point of view on this matter.... I live in Alabama, a very conservative state, and I have heard every way conservatives can spin this in a negative way from "they will pick and choose who gets treatment and who doesn't" to " this is total socialism". OMG really?  How ridiculous you are if you believe this stuff...Nobody says it is perfect but the fact is that the medicare/medicaid (gov't ran healthcares btw) are going under....
I know people get comfortable with certain situations but times change and situations change and you either evolve or....

There is nothing wrong with America's Healthcare system now....
be mindful of where you get your statistics the bias in America's media outlets is disgusting. the Obama administration is a corrupt one and nothing he advocates is beneficial to my country. yes aspects of the current healthcare system could be improved but not in anyway that the government is proposing. i am a die hard Libertarian who firmly believes that the government should NEVER EVER interfere with personal liberty....

First off, a person can get a job if they work at it. I've had a job since age 15. My dad worked all his life until retirement. Both of my brothers and both of my sisters have ALWAYS been employed. And we're an immigrant family!
Secondly, I already pay more than my fair share of taxes. Now instead of paying insurance premiums to a corporation run by fiscally responsible people you suggest that I give this money to our government. The government that can't even take care of what they have now. No thanks.
Thirdly, Obama doesn't even have a plan so how would we know if it will work or not. If it smells like socialism, it is socialism!!!!

HR 3200 (America’s Affordable Health Choices Act of 2009) is along the lines of this thread.  Although it hasn't been voted on the by the house or senate, this is the most matured piece of legislation, capable of making it to Obama's desk in time.

I agree in some respects, but surely if it is implemented in the right way it will benefit those who do their utmost but are still unable to afford suitable healthcare.

I for one am very grateful to our NHS because without it I would not have been able to afford the 5+ years worth of treatment that I have had after being diagnosed with cancer in 2001, even with private health insurance.

I am not lazy, infact I signed myself of the sick at the finish even though the doctors advised against it & I am still working to this day. Both my parents always worked 'til retirement too. Without the NHS I would in all likelihood be dead.

Yeah it's not perfect, but not much is.

It doesn't just help the greedy, it helps the needy too.

That may be true in ur case but not in everyones case. You every heard of the expression the last to come the first to go? I've seen people at my job who have gotten hired and when the company starts have financial problems and cant afford to pay workers its usually the last ones who were hired. Especially in the US jobs arent the easiest things to get theses days so universal healthcare coverage will help alot of people. Now i do agree that if a person isnt trying to better them self and are just relying on the government then they dont deserve anything, but there are many people who are trying and just arent getting any jobs and no healthcare, and thats not good. My family are from Jamaica so i kno how it is for immigrant families its hard but my people worked hard and made it, but whats happens for 1 person doesnt make it happen for everyone.

There is no need to reform "Health Care" in the US. Our care is one of the best, if not the best in the world. "Health Insurance" reform is a more appropriate objective. However, I have a major problem with the US government as a market participant in a private sector. If they want reform, pa** laws regulating the industry. Don't jump in as a competitor. I don't see the US government running a competitor to NYSE or NASDAQ. However, I do see laws, i.e., The Securities Act of 33, The Securities Exchange Act of 34 and Sarbanes-Oxley which heavily regulate the markets. Why not do the same?

Second, healthcare is not a fundamental right and should not be bestowed upon everyone. If free healthcare is premised on the fundamental right to life, then we are going down a very slippery slope. Then, like the Commerce Clause/Power of Congress, the government will have the power to do anything based on preservation of life. A line must be drawn somewhere and I think the American public has had enough of this issue and is not buying it.

Hahahaha.  Don't mind the death panels represented in the video, since they aren't in the bill.
