Have you ever wondered how you would respond in a situation where true courage and bravery is required? Someone once said courage or bravery is not an absence of fear but having fear and doing something anyway....
There is an amazing woman, Marisol Valles, a 20 year old university student with an infant son, who has become the Chief of Police in the town of Praxelis Guadalupe Guerrero, Mexico. She applied for the job and , amazingly, was the most qualified out of the handful of people who applied.
The town where she is now the Chief of Police, is a hotbed of killings, kidnappings, and beheadings in Mexico's ongoing battle with narco-traffickers. Just last week a town official and his son were killed. The last mayor of the town was murdered in June and there have been 8 killings in the last month alone.
I've provided a link below to just one of the stories about her currently showing up in many newspapers around the world:
Well, can any of you invision putting yourself in a situation where there is almost a certain probability that you will die a violent and horrific death? I suppose, those who join the armed forces while we are actively involved in 2 wars, especially those who enlist as infantry, special ops, etc. are the nearest I can think to exhibiting such bravery...
edit: Here is another link to the story...
The story above actually says she was the ONLY one to apply for the job.

Complete Decriminalization/legalization of Narcotics is the only answer. What's happening in Mexico is a byproduct of the idiotic Drug War |

Fluffy Fluffingtion,
I used to strongly disagree with decriminalizing any drugs but now I'm not so sure it's such a bad idea...particularly marijuana. I can't wait to see if California passes its law to decriminalize small amounts of it even though the Feds have said they will still consider it illegal. I think though that before they decriminalize ALL narcotics, they should see how easing the marijuana laws goes.
But anyway, no matter, I still think she is a truly brave person. Furthermore, I think bravery such as hers is not the norm and that the instinct for self-preservation overrides such self-lessness in the majority of people.
Post Script:
Just to clarify that last sentence...To my mind there is a difference between doing something brave spur-of-the-moment, under the gun so to speak, and on the other hand, having the time to think something out at leisure, going into it knowing full well the dangers it poses for you and your loved ones.
For instance, probably many people would do something very brave if it meant protecting a family member especially if time was of the essence, no time to weigh the pros/cons and delay would mean certain death, as in a car crash or burning building.
The sort of bravery this woman is showing is obviously well thought out and done with full knowledge of possible consequences. It is THIS sort of bravery that I think is not the norm for most of us.

Mexican authorities impound 105 tonnes of marijuana worth more than $340m in Tijuana city on border with US.
http://english.aljazeera.net/news/americas/2010/10/20101019251389590.html While it is impressive they were able to intercept such a large shipment, by Al Jazeera's numbers, this represents 1.5% of estimated annual exports. We lose such a large economic multiplier when people use substance from abroad, as users divert such scarce resources away from partial domestic growth. If it were decriminalized, people still should still be liable, they are under the influence and get in a crash. That chick is really cool. |

Wikileaks uploaded ~400,000 new war documents, compared to ~60,000 before.
It was really interesting to go to each news service, especially outside the US and see how they composed the story. China Daily, China's state run media, hasn't run a story yet, which is probably deliberate. |

A European high court has ordered that all PS3s warehoused in Europe (including the UK) are to be kept on lockdown for at least 10 days. A Korean company, LG, has been suing Sony over what they say are patent infringements concerning the blue-ray technology inside the PS3s. The article says there are probably 2 to 3 weeks worth of consoles in-store but they would run out of PS3s after that....
If LG wins their suit, it could cost Sony 100s of millions of pounds! Link to the article is below:

Lol the news makes it seem like the end of the world is near. Strange weather and natural disasters have always occurred. These things go in patterns. Thing is we now have 1000’s of sources and outputs providing us with this information at a constant, where 20 years ago we didn’t see this much detail of it. The world is not coming to an end, people

Second massive hydrogen explosion at the ***ushima plant. 2000 corpses have been found washed ashore in Miyagi Prefecture, 1000 in the town of South Sanriku alone, which was demolished in the quake. Powerful aftershocks are still shaking Tokyo, and a second major earthquake is possible. Toyota, Sony, Toshiba and Honda have closed most or all of their Japanese factories due to damage.

^Yes I heard htis morning that 2000 bodies had been washed ashore but the reporter then said the death toll so far was 1600! Thought it was a mistake but seems like it was a picture unfolding I guess. Yet another tragedy unfolds but agreed Seph its because we are receiving better news coverage straight into our homes so the impact is greater. An earthquake >8 on the Richter scale occurs on average once every year. The Japanese won't abandon nuclear energy just attempt to make it even more safer/less susceptable to earthquakes. Sounds insensitive to say but their economy will tumble and the price of Japan's goods worldwide will rise.

a foreign source is going to lead US troops? WTF? one of the stupidest things ive ever heard! the US needs to start getting the fk out of the middle east! if muslims are hellbent on war and jihad then let them fight with eachother. Russia and China are setting back and saving there money and resources while we focus on the wrong places in the middle east. were spending a fortune in the middle east and loosing troops for what? each tomahawk cruise missle is multi millions and were fn beyond broke! what the US needs to do is pull all our troops out of where there at and move all of our forces in posistion to kick Irans ass! give Iran a choice and a deadline. they will fail to meet our terms then we completely decimate there military, and destroy there nucleur program! then we pull out of the middle east! use our navy to keep watch over Isreal! our oil dependancy has to be solved over here! once were independent of foreign oil we'll be less likely to be milipulated into war in the future. the US needs to pull out totaly now, or kick Irans ass and then pull out. i say kick Irans ass completely and then pull out. Iran has always been our biggest problem in the middle east! we made it worse by taking down Iraq not better! were spending way too much money and loosing troops over there for such little results.. the terrorists are getting a fortune to recruit, train and plan so your not going to stop that! Saudi Arabia and Iran are flipping the bill! Iran having nukes is the worse case scenario! kicking there ass has to be done so why keep fk'ing around in Iraq, Aphganistan and now Libia? its a big waste of money and lives! its time to cut the head off the snake and then bring em home! oil is funding terrorism and were buying the oil? make oil virtually worthless and they'll go broke! drill more here until we get our vehicles switched.

If Isreal does it then the whole middle east may use it as a reason to war with Isreal? If we decimate Irans military and totally destroy there nuclear program they will probably never recover and therefore never have another nuclear program.. even if they try again it would take a really long time.. all these years in Aphganistan and were not even close to acomplishing anything significant.. we need to get out of Aphganistan and start totally focusing on Iran! If they get nukes it will be to late! they will be able to threaten us forever! Is there any intelligent person that believes that Iran wouldn't use nukes in some way? Iran giving terrorist groups nuclear material for dirty bombs is just as bad as a missle and much more likely.. Iran having nukes is the scariest scenario there is for the US and Isreal.. and its very close to happening! Pakistan already has nukes but were not in Pakistan, and unless radicals take over Pakistan then there not a threat like Iran.. Libia is no threat at all! Iraq is no threat at all! Aphganistan is no threat at all!
the biggest threats to the US are #1 Iran #2 Pakistan/Egypt if radicals get control at some point because they have nukes #3 China in the near future.. China will dictate in the near the future! there's no doubt about that! China will have the greatest wealth to ever exist soon! there growth will be on a huge scale! there massing raw materials now! they will be unstopable in the future! there the sleeping giant now! |

Perhaps it is being naive, but I don't believe WW3 would start if Israel took care of this problem....

yea Isreal did do airstrikes on Iran but things were different 30 years ago.. Isreal could still do air strikes because they have our planes and the hardest training pilots in the world.. but airstrikes alone wouldn't destroy Irans nucleur program! they'd haft to have troops on foot do that.. thats not an option for Isreal! there too small to defend themselves and send troops all the way to Iran! If Iran bordered Isreal then Isreal would have already taken care of the problem imo
the US getting involved in Libya at this point is just ignorant! while we focus on Iraq, Aphganistan and Libya.. Iran is working hard on there nukes! if people fear a nucleur plant leaking radiation in Japan how they going to feel when the crazy ass radical religious finatics that are the leaders in Iran get nukes? they think there to bring about massive bloodshed to bring there savior to destroy all non muslims! the more bloodshed they can cause the better muslim they are in there radical belief! thats pure evil! if we don't take them serious and stop them from completing there nukes? they will nuke Isreal! and they will try to nuke the Us in one way or another! terrorists working with Mexican drug cartels is evidence that theyre working on another attack on us within our country! smuggled in dirty bombs is obviously what there going to try to use.. there saying our border is more secure then ever? thats a flat out intentional lie! |

I thought that was pretty interesting.. Scientists in China have claimed to have found a chemical in mice which controls their sexual preference.. Things like this make me wonder about the place of psychology and ethics in the future, seeing it might become possible to 'cure' sexual preference, depending on your point of view. |

The only country not embroiled in the uprising in the middle east is Iran so your solution to a quick end to all this is to start a war on Iran! Well thats a little bizarre to say the least. Until you actually try to understand whats going on in this part of the world then please stop acting like you know, and dispensing with your rhetoric - its called propaganda! In reality you know as much as anyone else here, proly less than some and maybe more than others. If you know anything then you will know that your government backed a regime to neutralise the threat of Iran when the Shah was deposed and the Ayatollah seized power. The country was Iraq and the leader was a certain Sadaam Hussain. You will also recall backing a regime in Afghanistan in order to fight the advancement of Russia into the region. The rebel movement were the Taliban and chief amongst them was a certain Osama Bin Laden. I;,, leave you to connect the dots cos you're way too smart to be told! |
