    Posted: 10 Aug 2010 at 11:47am
Hello,

During a conversation I had with SlightlySt00pid I proposed an idea to him about recruiting prominent and talented members of the Unreal Tournament 3 community to create a youtube channel. This youtube channel would be managed by a small group of people in the UT3 community and would be updated frequently. The channel would be similar to that of http://youtube.com/gearsopedia and will contain: montages, competitive matches, top 5/10 plays of the week, commentary, etc. There could be content pertaining to older Unreal Tournament games, however, it is preferred that the focus of the channel be squarely on the most recent iteration of the series, "Unreal Tournament 3".

This youtube channel will be the community's last ditch effort at revitalizing interests for the game. Some players are even bothered by the fact that Epic Games has no updates scheduled for UT3. Personally I don't think it's a big deal since the game has mod support. The existence of mods adds to the game's replay value, customization, and extendability. There also exist mods that enhances gameplay such as the dodgejump and OnSlaught 2.0.

However I can't do this alone as this requires the collective effort of a team of talented individuals who possess a certain skillset. That is what's required to have this idea come into fruition. If you're one of the following then please contact me:

Video Editor -- A video editor would be someone who, given various gameplay clips, would be able to put together a montage. This person is familiar with various video effects and can work his or her way around well known video editing applications such as Adobe After Effects and Sony Vegas.

Graphic Designer -- A graphic designer would be someone responsible to designing the youtube layout and the logo associated with the channel.

Manager -- In addition to me there would need to be additional people who can manage the youtube channel by answering people's questions, receiving clips in email, and possibly managing the twitter account associated with this project.

Commentator -- A commentator would be responsible for providing commentary for top plays of the week and other gameplay videos. Ideally this person would need a high quality microphone and be somewhat familar with the gameplay mechanics of UT3 (so he would know what the hell is going on in the game).

Note: It should be noted that I'm not just looking for one person to fill each role. If I'm approached with multiple talented video editors, for instance, then they all get the job. Ideally there won't be a go to guy for everything, there will be multiple people for each role.

Note #2: All pessimistic replies ("lol UT3 is dead this will never work!") will be ignored. Yes the game isn't as popular as Modern Warfare 2 but there are still people who play; the community still exists.

Note #3: If you record your UT3 gaming sessions frequently (or even occasionally) you're more than welcome to join our team).

I'm not sure what the point of your post was. Those channels are dead, presumably managed by a single individual (where in my case I want a team/staff), low production value (non-HD videos, no intro or promotional videos, and a generic youtube layout).

I'm looking to create a channel that's frequently updated, has quality montages, and a place where we can organize tournaments and events. Not just post simple videos in 480p.

A team effort is far more likely to fail than an individual effort. Simply recording footage and dumping it on youtube is time consuming and what you're talking about is considerably more time consuming. People are going to lose interest and your project will become just like those.

(those videos have a HD option, btw)

I'm more than familiar with the process of uploading youtube videos since I manage another channel (http://youtube.com/xarathustratv). With Xarathustra TV I did EVERYTHING from the 3D video intros (which took hours to render), to the youtube layout, and I uploaded every single video on there.

With this new endeavor I want to be surrounded by a dedicated team where everyone has roles and specialties. I don't want to be a one-man army again. What I'm asking for isn't unrealistic.

I've been editing lately on my brother's Mac g5 with final cut pro... None of this windows movie magic crud.. I might be able to help out from time to time rendering for you guys. This sounds like a great idea. You should have a board of directors voting for what clips go in. We don't want people recording their videos with the slow motion mod doing "unbelievable" shock combs to bots.....

You have any samples of your editing work?

I think he's mainly offering to help render?
In that case his editing isn't very relevant

You could stop adding links now. I already know about all of those channels and then some. You seem to be under the impression that I'm completely ignorant of UT3 videos on youtube. I'm just trying to create something more organized and professional. Not some random guy in Minnesota who scarcely uploads random gameplay video.

Well judging from how he wrote his post it does seem that way. Hopefully that isn't the case since a 'renderer' who doesn't do video editing is just as pointless as someone who does video editing but doesn't render.

While your attempt is admirable, one simple problem with the PS3 is utility. I understand that the PC was plagued with a lot of silly UI issues and demo recording problems. But with the PS3 there is no spectator mode. In Duel you can spectate, but there is no first person. GodsOfWarfare implemented a spectator mode that does work for the PS3. But i believe it only serves in third person.

For the UT3 community to have any remote stuff to suggest to the channel we would really need clans who have servers to host matches to implement this Spectator mode. Otherwise you may just end up with footage from dueling. Also it seem's some custom content is incompatible with dedicated servers. So the amount of footage on custom maps would be fairly limited.  And stuff such as RypelCam wont ever be seen on a PS3.

I am not trying to be pessimistic, but the PS3 version lacks a lot of utility.  There is a vast amount of interesting things you can do on PC that simply does not exist on PS3. Only way you will get first person footage is by someone who personally owns a capture card. Otherwise everything else will be in 3rd person.

My suggestion is to have PUG match's consisting on veteran players. And have the dedicated server use the spectator mode. That way we may get recording of good game play footage. But im sure this has a long way to go. But I will think of more suggestions as time passes.

I think alot of us already know about the PS3 Spectator mod. The main problem with it is that you can't spectate in first-person view which would make it more immersive.

That really isn't a problem just as long as your commentary is entertaining. Some of the commentators on Gearsopedia would poke fun at other people's clips but they were entertaining regardless.

His first paragraph states that there's only 3rd person spectator mode through the use of the GOW_Spectator mod
On PC you have demos which record the entire game, it's possible to re-watch (and record) it from 3rd person, 1st person or free roam from whatever angle you like. Using free roam or the camera that focusses on the flag in a live match would be very situational if you get something good enough.

Nice post Drokun. In Ps3 version we need restart the server after each match if you put GOW_Spectator.

Either you are retarded, or you simply have a misunderstanding.

Let me make a chart to define what I mean.

PS3 version only has ONE native mode that has spectator mode. That mode is Duel. And you can ONLY view from 3rd person or free roam.

To have 3rd person spectation on any other mode, you will need a spectator mutator. Such as the one provided by GodsofWarfare.

You can optionally join a server and not play and just free roam with the camera before you spawn. But that is honestly a lame way to spectate.

Even with the Spectator mutator you will only be able to view players in 3rd person.

The only possible way for someone to record in first person is by someone who owns recording devices. And only a very view have such devices. So my point about this is, MOST footage will be 3rd person.

Yes, you can do video editing with any material you record. But my point was there is way more utility on the PC version. So you wont see any Alas or Abracadabra like camera angel's on the PS3 version.

And to respond to your PM, I am not trying to shoot this dude down from making this happen. I perfer it be succsesful. I was just making a point about how limited PS3 footage would be in style and camera angle's. But it is evident that you completely misunderstood my post.

Hmmm....I wonder if that has to do with not reading maybe?

i see lots of things u can't do helscream - but nothing you can do-
either u are retarded - or u just like stating the obvious-for example
you are spitting hostile **** at the wrong person for no reason: so quit now

- suggestions that work are alot better than things that dont--since  that everyone else knows them already (well i clearly do coz i suggested it and am the only who utilised it)?
and AE with cover any less than high standard videos- people can just use what they have --
thus your point although valid - stands nothing to gain from it - ya gets me?
any way again this aint a dig at you : but quit the attitude  little boi - ive stopped hassling people and given up on the retarded ones like yourself- now your turn to leave me alone #
