Mods, if this is the wrong section (which I'm sure it is lol) for this thread than feel free to move it. Only reason this area was chosen is due to higher traffic than the rest of the website.

My PS3 took s sh!t yesterday while playing Skyrim. The PS3 reset on it's own and a red light started blinking. I unplugged it and let the thing sit for the rest of the night. I then tried screwing around with it this morning only to get the YLOD (briefly) followed by the blinking red light.

I've been reading different guides for a YLOD fix, but before I attempt any repair, I was wondering if any insight could be offered by those who have dealt with this problem.

Here's my repair references that I will use:

I have a 60gb launch unit btw. Thanks for any help!

I was able to "repair" my 40gb ps3 using the djwhetzel vid on youtube. Just know it's a temp fix that could last anywhere from a few hours to a half a year or so. I was able to keep mine going for about 8 months on 4 different fixes but it got to the point where it would only last an hour before dying. Only thing I did different was wrap my hand in a shirt a firmly press on the gpu & cpu after heating it up. Gets very hot though so be careful if you decide to do that and honestly don't know if it even helped.

I heard a company called gophermods is good for ylod fixes and even comes with a warranty. I believe they actually re solder the joints. Try to avoid sending it back to sony. They replace the mobo which causes your HD to be wiped clean and that's even if you get the same unit back.

Thank you fellas for the heads up! The djwhetzel video is the one I'm going to use to for reference. My plan is to fix the unit, back up the data, and either play it till it dies or sell it right away. Regardless of the outcome, I see a PS3 slim in my future!

If I hit any serious snags along the way, maybe I will turn to a repair service. That shouldn't be an issue though. I'm fairly adept at fixing things when they go bad, so the PS3 should be no different.

If anyone has any caveats regarding the actual disassembly, please post those!

I lack the necessary tools for repair, so once that is all in order, I'll be G2G. I'll update this thread as the repair process comes along.

Overall, taken it apart was fairly simple just try to keep the parts with its screws separate from the others. Only issue I remember having was removing the mobo from the metal casing that that contains your heatsinks and fan. It was a real pain every time for me. I never figured out a trick to easily remove it just a delicate brute force if that makes any sense.

As far as the reflow process don't be afraid to heat it up just makin sure not to keep the heat in one place for to long. My first fix only lasted a few days because I just didn't heat it up enough. Second time I realized I didn't have much to lose so i brought the heat and did the before mentioned press to the edges of the cpu/gpu and that time lasted 5ish months. Its also worth a mention to completely remove the old thermal paste with rubbing alcohol before you start the process and add more before you put it back together.

Puttin it back together was easy enough just don't be surprised if you have a few screws left over =) It's also worth mentioning when putting the top part of the case back on that you start with the front of it so your power & eject button touch the motherboard. Then snap the back in place and add your screws.

Hope this helps a bit & good luck. oh and yeah, I eventually just bought a slim

Fixing YLOD yourself = good luck with the ice bags

Remember the PS3 from, i thought it was Incremental?

Better off fixing it at a game shop for cheap.

Thank you Lunar! What you have contributed will help me immensely as soon as the heat gun, screwdriver set, and thermal compound arriveSmile Total cost of materials = $42. I just hope nothing gets messed up as I really want my Skyrim save data lol. I'm 130 hours deep into my game and it feels like I just scratched the surface!

One and a half months later I have finally fixed my PS3. Instead of selling the now fixed one as previously planned, it's going to be my dedicated Blu-ray player. When Black Friday hits, I'll pick up a slim when they're dirt cheap. Just in time for winter breakBig smile
