We all know what happens there... Defending ones position is difficult. I can tell you this with absolute certainty; if you fail to have a deep understanding of both sides of an issue and you are not prepared to defend your position on a subject in a way that is kind, compelling and meaningful, then you would do well to keep your mouth shut. The thread title says "Religion and Politics". God forbid the two should ever meet... | well since keeping your mouth shut leads to 0 discussion, i think saying keep your mouth shut is the 1 thing that shouldn't ever be suggested. and its probably the biggest diss also. |
I meant no disrespect. I suppose my point could have been made more gently by saying people shouldn't debate at great length and with firey passion those things they have only a superficial knowledge of.
| its all good Aqua xD just remember there's a method to my madness, even though its not always aparent. ive delt with youth a quite a bit xD there's 2 sides to the discussion but were all acually on the same side. so its just discussion no matter what the belief is.

He died in the mid 1600's, during a time when humanity's grasp on earth and the universe was very weak. I'll trust his triangle for factoring, but not his opinion on religion. |
yep he lived in the 1600's and he was absolutely right in that quote! and were not one bit smarter then they were back then! we may have some new technology but were no smarter then they were. |
I disagree with you. I think that we're smarter because technology and science has given us new insight into the world as we know, creating a wealth of knowledge that wasn't around in the 1600's. That alone makes us more "enlightened" that those in the 1600's. But yeah, you could be right if you're strictly speaking from "the human brain hasn't evolved" perspective. Our brains, no, but our thoughts, yes. There's a big difference between the two.

hanfei hasn't...hes posted his opinions respectfully. a few individuals threw some insults, which u also readily returned....the fact that a few happened to be atheist is really irrelevant except that it gives u something to label them and make generalised statements that are more untrue than true i.e "you atheists began the insulting"

the ten commandments were meant for jews under the law.
the usa is a great variety but we arent all jewish.
the commandment of love which sums up the law is for christians.

Ten commandments? there were more than just 10! Not everything in the Bible is to be taken literally. However these laws shouldn't be open to direct indifference. Yes true it was meant to guide the Israelites (Jews). Christianity is a progression from Judaism so its laws are progressive, thats how I see it. Also if we were to adhere steadfastly to literal translations we would be rooted in a time period of 2 millennia or more (like fundamentalists). Ether think of it this way, if a rule is in place and it is continuously broken is it because the rule isn't a good one or is it because the people are disobedient? The only way to find out is to adapt, replace or remove the rule and see if their behaviour improves. So the sanctity of marriage is no longer highly valued and people co-habit. Are things better or worse or same as before? Do people still cheat on their partners or do they honour them with fidelity?

ik thats why i made sure i added the law
but we arent required (christians) to adhere to the law.
For all the law is fulfilled in one word, [even] in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
galatians 5:14
otherwise we couldnt eat certain foods, dress certain ways, and etc.
i just used the 10 commandments because thats what he used. but the entire system is "the Law"
thank God we dont have to follow all the strict doctrines of the Law.
"But now we are discharged from the law, dead to that which held us captive, so that we serve not under the old written code but in the new life of the Spirit." -Romans 7:6

You only have to look back through the posts to see the truth. IMHO once someone starts trading insults rather than respond to someone else's viewpoint they've stopped thinking. Anger is a result of your frustration to properly deal with the situation so like a suggested b4 lets keep it respectful cos its healthier that way. If we all listen and consider we will all learn and be better for it!

yeah i guessed so but I posted so that duckboy might receive some food for thought. The food thing gets me all the time. I mean I eat whatever I choose to eat (dunno bout u). I remember every Good Friday we never ate meat just fish. My mom just observed this tradition from back home in Jamaica. Then I found out it was because of the feast of the passover - a jewish tradition! Eating the meat of the swine because it doesn't chew the cud or have a single hoof? Fish that have no scales? They're all on the menu for me lol. But my brother who's married to a 7th day Adventist cant eat these nor does he eat beef (BSE scares put him off lol). These were references to the Jews.

Dagan was doing it from the beggining and where was you then? the only guys i noticed stating that there athiests or were Tuna, Lunchy and Dagan. and its clear who i was talking about so what does it really matter? i stated what i think in the begining without throwing any insults! i just don't mind throwing some insults back if you have a problem with me throwing insults back where they came from thats just tough sh1t xD your bias is obvious though!

I'm agnostic, but theoretically speaking, I guess you could group me with the rest of the atheists to. I'm not sure about Han-fei, but I think he's atheist.

i disagree with 99% of what you say. despite that, never stop saying it.
your opinion is just as valid as phant's, mine, anyone's. it's a subject you are obviously passionate about and because of that it's hard to remain cool sometimes. in debates like this i think atheists automatically have the upper hand because of the ability to remain detached from the situation.
i like devil's advocate. if you drop out of "team god", tag me over and i'll have give it a go. i always wondered what it'd feel like to defend OJ Simpson.
