True from the heart post, and supra about you not caring about hearing those words if you were gay....correct me if im wrong but i'm sure you cant speak for the people that actually are any of those words. Maybe you wouldn't think much, but some people may take it to offence. Besides you may only say you wouldn't care now but if you were in that situation first hand you may think different. You would be surprised how actually being in the situation can change a persons mind.

i think they probably would :/

I've heard insults like those hanfei mentioned many times in Preston but they're always said by people when they're in groups and never on their own.  Cowardly really.

haha, it's all good.  Although hateful phrases will never leave the lexicon, their occasional use is never something to get ruffled over, especially in tense games!  The problem comes when people purposely choose derogatory phrases against a group because they think it's the worst thing they can say.  Rwandan Tutsis c***roaches are an example in the extreme.

While the below if when out school painted the free expression tunnel for national coming out week, I haven't painted the tunnel yet.

If i were gay i would take no offense to it.  If some one said to me that i was in the wrong for adoring women, id just laugh.  Then again, being straight was never a burden.  But just the same, they like what they like, and some one saying something about yourself (thats true)  shouldnt bother you.

At the end, there is a brief summation, if you don't want to read below.
  • Freedom of expression is a right in most countries.  Even in countries that control and restrict the flow of information like Burma, China, etcetera, individuals are "free" to express themselves in private.  Yet, despite this liberty to communicate essentially anything, we, as individuals, should continuously evaluate our actions based on their consequences, rather than against personal values.
  • Now that exams are over, I've been seeing friends online more often and hearing degrading remark, perhaps unintentional, towards members of the LGBQT community (Lesbian, Gay, Bi, Queer, Questioning, Transgender)
  • Usually during a full game, someone uses the words gay, f**ot or homo in a derogatory fashion.  While I can only imagine how a member of the LGBQT community feel damaged by these remarks, clearly, we don't make such degrading marks towards other minorities... other members... of our gaming community like women, blacks, Hispanics, etcetera.
  • Perhaps, this dynamic stems from 2 factors, relative online anonymity and lack of conventional social constraints.  This creates a digital playground; wherein, people act differently than they would at say the bank or grocery.
In short, during this holiday season and at all times, I implore you to continuously evaluate what you directly mean and say that, instead of some indirect, anti-gay remark.

Small people talk about other people.  Average people talk about things.  Influential people talk about ideas.

Keep it classy,
HanFei
